HMVT supports TU Eindhoven in development airtreatment with supercritical fluids

8 February 2012

Topic of this project is:

Exploring a new medium for high-power switching: supercritical fluids.

Project Leader:

Bert van Heesch.

Goal of this project:

Study the high power switching phenomena in supercritical fluids, as well as the recovery velocity of the supercritical medium after the breakdown. Feasibility of circuit breakers with supercritical fluid insulating will be studied on the bases of knowledge gained via experiments and modelling.

Expected research results are:

  1. A heavy duty pulsed power switch for long duration repetitive high–voltage switching.
  2. Fundamental understanding of streamers, breakdown and arc extinction in supercritical fluids: experimental and model.
  3. Fundamental for the designing of a SF6-free high-voltage circuit breaker operating in the supercritical plasma mode.
