MFE, or Multi-Phase Extraction, has always been an extraction system that uses a high vacuum pump. This pump reaches very low pressures, which is ideal for extraction around the phreatic surface. There is also talk about Three Phase Extraction, because often a mixture is extracted with water, product (LNAPL) and soil air.

Other names are high vacuum extraction, triple-phase extraction, multiple-phase extraction and dual phase extraction example. Often the name says something about the precise purpose: Air + extract product could for example be described as "Two-Phase Extraction".
